The Science of Being Kind explores the science behind both the act of being kind as well as the impact of being kind on other. Drawing from the Positive Psychology Centre at the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University’s broad research into the science behind the act of kindness, this presentation offers the insights, and skills to apply the science into one’s life and actions. Specifically Martin Seligman (2005) one short single ‘Gratitude visit’ in person, can increase your subjective well-being for up to three months. And Sonja Lyubomirsky (2005) acts of kindness make measurably us feel better, both of the people who receive the act of kindness, and one’s own happiness.

The science of being kind equips and empowers participants with the following learning goals and outcomes…

Awareness of the largest global survey of humanity’s strengths and it’s application to their self-worth.

Highlighting the practical role kindness plays in day to day life when it comes to respectful relationships.

Helping students to apply immediately a practical skill of kindness within their relationships

Strategic Conflict uses the philosophy of non-violent communication, espoused by Marshall C. Rosenberg and others, to teach students how to see conflict as a potential opportunity to strengthen relationships and emotional environments, rather than seeing it as something destructive that is to be avoided. Students are given the opportunity to reflect on previous conflict situations they’ve been a part of and ask questions that will help them diagnose why it was a helpful conflict or something problematic. They are given specific skills that will allow them to create environments where conflict can produce win-win situations, rather than lose-lose or win-lose. The outcome of the seminar helps students to be effective in conflict and healthily negotiate problematic scenarios.

Strategic Conflict equips and transforms students with the following learning goals and outcomes …

Realising that the outcome of conflict done well, is more than compromise or winning

Explaining the philosophy behind conflict that is strategic and healthy

Illustrating how to embrace conflict for its potential

Understanding roles that people play within conflict and how to operate healthily in whatever role you are in

Distinguishing between the three main outcomes that can be achieved through conflict

Identifying how to avoid triangulation in a conflict

The Leader Within is an interactive seminar aiming to increase the emotional intelligence and competence within students. The day engages with both theory of emotions as well as practical skilling and active experiences that combine to develop a greater capacity of helping others through managing their own emotional state; simply, that they must first lead themselves before they can lead others. Students self-assess their emotional competency, and this is then confirmed or adjusted as each area of emotional intelligence is unpacked throughout the day.

The Leader Within equips and empowers students with the following learning goals and outcomes…

Creating awareness of emotions, how they affect us, and how to identify and differentiate them

Encouraging students to practice the skills of restraint – healthy management of their emotions

Addressing resilience of emotions and optimism through practical and research-based applications

Exploring the skill of empathy and its antonym: Narcissism

Implementing the content of the day through whole group activities which test the students’ understanding of concepts and skills as well as their ability to work with others
