BEING A BLOKE

  • by

Being a Bloke is a challenging program designed to inspire and provoke male students to consider what the essence of healthy masculinity is, and what it means to become a man (rights and responsibilities).  The seminar enables students to consider the various “stereotypes” of masculinity the media project and analyse how healthy or unhealthy those images are.  Building on this, the seminar introduces the psychological development of males and confronts mentalities of fear, passivity and arrogance. Finally the seminar establishes and applies the three dominant principles of healthy masculinity: strength, action and character.

Being a Bloke equips and empowers students with the following learning goals and outcomes

  • Analyse the stereotypes of masculinity and uncertainty surround what it means to be male in our culture.
  • Explain the stages of development within adolescence and into adulthood.
  • Identify four dominant archetypal images on masculinity, from unhealthy to healthy.
  • Establish what types of healthy, selfless actions they could do that would display character in their world: family, school, and other activities.

As per Personal and Social Capabilities in the Australian National Curriculum, students are invited to develop a realistic sense of their personal abilities, qualities and strengths; articulate their personal value system and analyse the effects of actions that repress social power; analyse self-discipline strategies and personal goals; and reflect on feedback from other adults, to analyse personal characteristics and skill set that contribute to or limit their personal and social capability.
