|
Binge drinking: NOT the final solution!“Binge drinking, alcohol abuse, substance abuse, substance addiction will become part of chronic disease conditions which effect the ability of people to lead a productive and happy life, their ability to be employed.” Kevin Rudd Prime Minister (26 Feb 2008 as quoted in The Courier-Mail).
The Federal Government's $53 million program to tackle binge drinking
is "a drop in the ocean, but it's a start". The chief executive of the
Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation, Daryl Smeaton, said
Labor should be congratulated for confronting the nation's biggest drug
problem, but it was only a start.
(12 Mar 2008 as quoted in The Courier-Mail). THE ALCOHOLOCAUST is an honest seminar exploring the motivating factors behind adolescent drinking. Exploring both the motivating factors behind drinking and investigate alternative methods for meeting the underlying need that drives adolescents to alcohol. THE ALCOHOLOCAUST takes a “common sense” approach to the subject matter, appealing the intellect and reasoning skills of the individual, than an emotive reactionary presentation. THE ALCOHOLOCAUST is based on the following assumptions; Adolescents drink for a reason. Without perceived benefits adolescents do not need to drink alcohol and can reconsider binge drinking behaviours. Adolescents when confronted with the motivating factors behind binge drinking can in fact re-think their drinking behaviour. THE ALCOHOLOCAUST addresses; social pressure, inhibitions, stress management, self medication (numbing the pain). THE ALCOHOLOCAUST empowers participant to seek and apply healthy alternatives to alcohol abuse for self expression and meeting their underlying needs. Why the Title ‘The Alcoholcaust’? • 64% of 14-17 year olds (2001) drinkers, drank at levels placing themselves at risk of harm. • 70% of males and 60% of female school leavers get drunk on most or all days/nights at schoolies. • The 3 leading causes of death among adolescents are all associated with alcohol (unintentional injuries, homicide, suicide) • 52% of all serious road injuries in Australia were sustained by people aged 15-24 (1996/7). (source: NHMRC 2001) During the Holocaust, 63% of the global Jewish population were estimated to be killed. (source: www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/holocaust/h-statistics.htm) Describing binge drinking, Daryl Smeaton, (the chief executive of the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation) ascribed the phrase “the nation's biggest drug problem”. |
